If you have been involved in a car accident, there are a few dos and don’ts of which you should be aware.
Do NOT Admit Fault
This one is easy – you should not admit fault after an accident. Instead, let the insurance companies and the police determine who caused your wreck.
Do NOT Apologize
You should never apologize after a car accident, even if you suspect you could have done something to avoid it. Even a polite “I’m sorry” could be used against you as an admission of liability.
Do NOT Post about Your Case on Social Media
After a car accident, you may have the urge to post about it on social media. After all, getting in a car accident is certainly a newsworthy event, and many people share much less notable events on their social media accounts.
Posting about your accident could harm your case, however, as insurance companies have been known to monitor victims’ accounts for any evidence of fraud or to gather additional information about how the accident occurred. For this reason, it’s a good idea to refrain from posting anything while your case is pending.
DO Be Cooperative with the Police
If the police show up at the scene, be cooperative with them and answer any questions they ask directly and to the point. That said, do not offer any more information than is asked. In most legal situations, offering more information than you should is much more likely to hurt your case than it is to help it.
