Frequently Asked Questions – Krause & Kinsman and Recovery Law Center
What caused the Kula Fire?
The Kula Fire, also known as the Upcountry Fire, has burned approximately 202 acres and destroyed 19 homes. While the official cause is still under investigation, security footage from the Maui Bird Conservation Center and electrical grid sensor data suggest that a tree may have fallen onto a powerline, sparking the fire. Similar to the Lahaina fire, downed power lines and aging infrastructure may have played a role. Krause & Kinsman, in partnership with Recovery Law Center, is committed to helping Kula residents recover and seek justice.
What resources are available to Maui fire victims?
Maui Fire victims have access to several resources, including relief funds, food banks, shelters, unemployment benefits, and mental health services.
Can Maui Fire victims get compensation?
Yes. If your damages are determined to be a direct, or indirect cause of the fire, anyone affected—including residents, businesses, and visitors—may be eligible for compensation. This includes coverage for evacuations, property damage, injuries, hospitalizations, wrongful death, increased insurance premiums, and other financial losses. Importantly, your citizenship or immigration status does not affect your ability to file a claim.
If I file a claim for my lost home, will it affect the settlement for people with injuries or wrongful death claims?
No, filing a claim for your lost home will not impact on the compensation assigned to those who suffered injuries or wrongful deaths. The settlement is typically structured to distribute funds across different categories based on the type of claim—such as property damage, personal injury, and wrongful death. Each claim is assessed separately, and compensation is allocated accordingly.
When Will I Get Paid?
There is no set date for settlement payments yet. The settlement process is currently paused as it awaits a decision from the Hawaii Supreme Court. Legal proceedings like this can take time, but we want to assure you that Krause & Kinsman, in partnership with Recovery Law Center, is here to guide you every step of the way.
We understand how difficult this time is, and our goal is to fight for the best possible outcome for you. While settlements can take time to finalize, we are committed to helping you reach a better place than you are now.
